AyahInk

Terms of Service

Effective 11 October 2026

Welcome to AyahInk. By using the AyahInk website and the Qur'an Journal web app (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms. Please read them alongside our Privacy Policy.

1. The Service

AyahInk provides a free Qur'an reflection journal and mushaf, offered in plans: Free, Plus, Complete and Supporter (described on our home page). The Qur'an, the journaling tools, and your ability to write and back up locally are free. Since October 2026 the Journal needs a free account to open; a journal kept on your device before then is untouched and opens when you sign in. Plus and Complete are listed with prices but are free of charge for now; we will tell you before that changes, and nothing you have written is ever removed because of a plan.

2. Your account

You need an account to use the Journal. You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for activity under your account. Accounts are for individual personal use: to keep a journal with someone else, share it with their own account (see Shared journals) rather than sharing your password. Notify us promptly of any unauthorized use.

You can be signed in to more than one account on the same device and switch between them from the ☰ menu. While an account is signed in there, anyone who can use that browser can switch to it without its password and read and write in its journals on that device. So an account is only as private as the device it is signed in on, and if you sign in on a device other people use, it is your responsibility to sign out of each account (☰ menu) when you are done. Signing out stops anyone switching to the account, but it does not erase the journals already kept on the device; clearing this site's data in the browser does that, so back up first. The Privacy Policy explains what is kept where.

3. Your content is yours

You retain full ownership of everything you write, highlight, draw, and record in your journal β€” including any voice reflections. By enabling Cloud Sync, you grant AyahInk only the limited permission needed to store, transmit, and sync your content across your own devices β€” and, for a journal you share or write in with others, to the people it is shared with β€” in order to provide the Service. We do not claim ownership of your reflections and we do not use them for advertising or model training. That applies to your voice recordings as much as to your writing.

Shared journals

With an account you can keep more than one journal, and share any of them except your main one with other people by their email address: Can view lets them read it, Can edit lets them read it and write in it. (To share what is in your main journal, make a copy of it and share the copy.) If you share a journal, or write in one that somebody has shared with you:

  • You choose whom to invite, and you are responsible for what you share. Share only what you have the right to share, and only with people you mean to. The people you invite see your email address and the addresses of everyone else on that journal. We do not read or review what is in shared journals.
  • Can edit means edit. Anyone you give Can edit can add to, change and delete anything in that journal β€” including what you wrote β€” and rename it. Give it only to people you trust with that, and keep your own backup (βš™ β†’ Backup my journal) of anything you could not bear to lose.
  • The owner decides who is in it. Only the owner of a journal can share it, change what someone may do, or remove someone. The owner can also delete the journal for everyone: it is then removed from our storage, including what others wrote in it, and from each device it is on the next time that device checks. You can leave a journal someone shared with you at any time.
  • What you write in someone else's journal is part of their journal. Your words are still yours, but if you leave or are removed, what you wrote stays there for its owner and the others on it, and it goes if the owner deletes the journal. If you want a copy of it, back it up while you have access.
  • Removing someone cannot take back what they have already seen. Their access ends when they are removed, and their app takes the journal off their device the next time it checks. Anything they already read, copied, saved or backed up while they had access stays with them; neither you nor we can recall it.
  • Encryption follows the owner's account. A shared journal is end-to-end encrypted only if the account that owns it is. What you write in a journal owned by an account without encryption is not end-to-end encrypted, even if your own account is; the app marks such journals, and the Privacy Policy explains what that means.
  • Invitations are not a way to message people. Each new invitation sends one email from us to the address you type. Do not use sharing to send unsolicited messages (advertising, or anything else people did not ask for), to harass anyone, or to find out whether an address uses AyahInk. There are limits on how many invitations you can send in a day, how many journals you can keep and how many people you can share one with, and we may limit or suspend sharing for an account that misuses it. If somebody shares a journal with you that you did not want, leave it, or email us at [email protected] and we will take your address off it.

Courses

Anyone may read our courses, and the courses our teachers have opened to students. To take part you ask to join one in the learning space, and a teacher of that course or AyahInk's owners decide whether to approve you; we may decline or remove anyone.

  • What your teacher sees. A course's teachers see your email address, your place on the course, the lessons you tick and your quiz answers, question by question, and scores β€” the Privacy Policy says exactly what, and you agree to it when you ask to join. They never see your Journal unless you share a journal with them yourself.
  • Quizzes are for learning. They check recall of what is in the course; they are not a test of faith, a qualification or a certificate. Take them yourself, on your own account.
  • Teachers. AyahInk's owners add teachers to a course, and decide who may make courses of their own. If you teach one, use what you see about your students only to teach that course, keep it to yourself, and do not use the learning space to contact students about anything else. Any checks your setting requires of people who teach β€” for example in a school or a madrasa β€” are for you and that setting to make; AyahInk does not vet teachers. We may remove a teacher at any time.
  • Courses and quizzes teachers make. If you make a course or a quiz, you are responsible for everything you write in it β€” its title, introduction, video link and questions β€” and it must keep to these Terms (Β§7). Do not type scripture into a course: no ayāt, and no translation of them. To show an ayah, add it by its number, and the page shows it from the Journal's own verified text; Arabic typed with vowel marks is refused. You may open a course to students, close it, and change or remove your quizzes β€” the answers students already gave are kept; a closed course takes nobody new and no new lesson ticks or quiz attempts, and what its students did stays (Privacy Policy). AyahInk's owners may close any course, and remove anyone from teaching it, at any time; a course they close stays closed until they reopen it.
  • Course content. The ayāt, translations and reflection prompts on every course page, including the courses teachers make, are the Journal's own bundled text. Videos and teachers' own words are their authors'; they are teaching, not religious rulings.

4. Free and paid plans; fair use

  • The Qur'an, journaling, and local backup are free, always.
  • Cloud Sync, the AI companion and related premium features are offered on paid plans, including a one-time "Lifetime" option. The AI companion uses your own AI provider's key; a plan pays for AyahInk's part of the feature, not for your provider's usage.
  • "Lifetime" means for the operational lifetime of the AyahInk Cloud Sync service. Paid storage is subject to reasonable personal fair-use limits; it is not an unlimited backup or file-hosting service, and abusive or automated bulk use may be limited.

5. Payments

When paid plans are active, payments are processed by Stripe. Prices and any refund terms will be shown at the point of purchase. Applicable taxes may apply.

6. AI features (optional)

The Journal has two optional AI features: reflection questions, which only ever ask (6a), and an AI chat, which can answer (6b).

6a. Reflection questions

You may connect your own AI provider account to generate additional reflection questions. Please understand what this feature is and is not:

  • It is a journalling aid, not a source of religious knowledge. The AI is instructed to do one thing only: ask you open questions about your own life. It must not tell you what a verse means, quote or translate scripture, or give any religious ruling. Nothing it produces is a fatwa, a tafsir, or religious advice, and it is not reviewed by a scholar before you see it.
  • AI-generated questions are always labelled and are kept separate from the questions written and checked by people, which remain unchanged on every ayah page.
  • AI output can be wrong. If a generated question misreads its verse or strays beyond asking a question, please report it using the report link on the question, or email us. Do not rely on it for religious guidance β€” for that, ask a qualified scholar.
  • You are responsible for your provider account, its terms, its rate limits and any charges it may incur. For this feature AyahInk does not supply, endorse, control or pay for any AI provider, and is not responsible for what a provider does with what is sent to it.
  • We may limit how often the feature can be used, or withdraw it, to keep the Service running.

6b. The AI chat

  • Its answers can be wrong. They are written by an AI, labelled as such, and are not reviewed by a scholar before you see them. Check anything that matters to you.
  • It is not a scholar, and nothing it says is a fatwa, a ruling, tafsir of its own, or professional advice β€” religious, medical, legal, financial or psychological. It is designed to decline rulings and point you to a qualified scholar you trust.
  • It quotes the Qur'an, translations and tafsir only from verified text our server looks up for your question, with a link to the source, and removes what does not match. A hadith may be quoted only from a sunnah.com page found in that conversation. These checks reduce mistakes; they cannot rule out every one, so treat the linked source as the authority, not the answer.
  • Approved sites are sources, not authorities on everything. If you turn on β€œSearch approved sites”, the AI may search only quran.com, sunnah.com, yaqeeninstitute.org (research papers), maristan.org, arabiclexicon.hawramani.com, britannica.com, quranenc.com, altafsir.com, seekersguidance.org and en.wikipedia.org (non-religious facts only), each for the purpose Privacy Β§5b lists. Those sites are run by others; we do not endorse or control what they publish, and an answer that cites one is still an AI's summary of it. A tafsir it cites names its author and school; a SeekersGuidance answer it cites is described, never given to you as a ruling.
  • It is not a crisis service. If you write about harming yourself, abuse or a crisis, it shows a link to findahelpline.com, a directory of helplines; it cannot contact anyone for you, and a listed service is run by others, not by us. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
  • The free allowance β€” currently 15 messages a day per account, five of which may also search approved sites β€” is provided at our cost and may change, pause or stop, including for everyone on a busy day. With your own AI key, the terms in 6a apply to your provider account.
  • Sharing an exchange is up to you. If you share one to help improve AyahInk, you confirm it contains nothing you are not entitled to share, and you can withdraw it at any time (Privacy Β§5b).
  • Do not use the chat to try to make it produce Qur'anic text, hadith or rulings from memory, or to get around its limits. We may limit how often it can be used, or withdraw it, to keep the Service running.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse the Service, including attempting to breach or probe its security, disrupt other users, send spam or unwanted journal invitations, reverse-engineer for abuse, or use it for unlawful purposes.

8. Availability and "as is"

We work hard to keep the Service reliable, but it is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for loss of data; please keep your own backups using the export feature. To the fullest extent permitted by law, AyahInk's liability arising from the Service is limited.

9. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time β€” entries kept on your own device are yours whatever happens here, and you can save a backup of them from the Journal, or from its sign-in screen, at any time. To have your account and its synced data deleted, ask us at [email protected] and we will remove them; a button for doing it yourself is on the way. Deleting your account also deletes the journals you own, for everyone you shared them with, and takes your address off journals other people shared with you; what you wrote in those stays in them (see Shared journals). We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that risk harm to the Service or its users.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. Material changes will be reflected by an updated effective date on this page. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and you agree that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service.

12. Contact
